As architects, we should start building structures that significantly reduce the emission of carbon footprints in the environment. In fact, just in the United States alone, buildings are responsible for emitting at least 39% of carbon dioxide in the environment, which has a negative effect on our climate.
If this continues, climate change will progress which would eventually lead to a substantial increase in the temperature. If left unattended, sea levels would rise, droughts and floods would occur, and even diseases would spread worldwide.
Carbon footprints are CO2 emitted from a building during it’s lifespan. Because most buildings last for a long time, carbon footprints are constantly emitted. Because of this dilemma, various eco-friendly strategies are created to eliminate these carbon footprints to a greater extent. Thus, for architects, we should at least follow some of these tips in order to reduce pollution and help save the earth.
1.Prepare as Early as Possible
Architects should meticulously start there projects by measuring and evaluating the building’s design. In this way, you can make reductions and find alternative materials and layouts that are friendlier for the environment.
2.Install HVAC Units
As much as possible, use eco-friendly heating and cooling air systems for the building. This is where most of the carbon footprints come from, so only use energy-efficient ones like HVAC units.
3.Add Continuous Insulation
Like HVAC units, continuous insulation is an excellent addition to a building because it covers alot of usages for just a minimal amount of energy, thus saving in the long run.
4.Choose your Lighting Fixtures
Aside from using high-tech lighting, you could also maximize daylighting to save energy furthermore.
5.Recycle Content and Materials
Use materials that are recyclable. Collaborate with local vendors and suppliers that sell green construction products and materials.
6.Consider the Water Supply
Like the lighting fixtures, the water supply in the building should follow water-oriented strategies in order to not only save energy but to also conserve the building’s water usage itself.
7.Use Renewable Energy
Renewable energy from the sun is definitely great in reducing the carbon footprint from a building. Because this method solely relies on solar energy, the building is less likely to use energy from harmful sources.
8.Know your Location
A building should be placed in an east to west axis. Also, the surrounding environment also matters, so choose your location wisely.
9.Utilize Innovative Wall Systems
The building should have a layer of double glazing, custom curtain wall, and cavity wall so that the heat would not escape outside that quickly.
10.Transport Materials Efficiently
Lastly, in transporting the materials for constructing the building, energy-efficient vehicles should be used. Also, you can purchase your materials locally so that you can limit your transportation cost and save more resources.
As one of the leading workforces in building creation, architects should be responsible not only in utilizing these energy-efficient strategies but also continually learning and promoting these eco-friendly methods in the public for a better and greener future.
